Dreynschlag™ proudly presents:
The Vienna Fencing Event Part II.
From: Friday February 2nd 2007, 2 p.m.
To: Sunday, February 4th 2007, 6 p.m.
And to prove that we have not spared neither expenses nor efforts to provide the finest minds in historical fencing (well, besides from us, as we are too lazy to do a lesson on our own) here is the overview over the trainers and lecturers we managed to sign on for your pleasure:
Matt Easton/Schola Gladiatoria (London): Fiori dei Liberi
Hans Heim und Alex Kiermayer/Ochs (Munich): Principles of the “Langes Messer”
Torsten Schneyer/Zornhau (Frankfurt): Principles of wrestling on the sword
Jörg Bellinghausen/Lichtgestalt (Semper et ubique): Principles of „Zufechten“ and fencing from the bind
Christoph Kaindel/Dreynschlag (Vienna): Lecture on "Old Style Knuckle Sandwich: The Art of Brawling in the late Middle Ages" (from his dissertation)
Maybe one more, we are still negotiating …
And what else …
As we have Matt Easton as one of the greatest experts on Fiore de Liberi with us, we are planning to do a workshop in which we want to work out the differences between the principles of the Liechtenauer-tradition on the one hand and the Fiore-tradition on the other. As discussions on this topic are running on some internet-forums for quite a while we intend to make the step from theory to practice and work it out together.
For those who arrive early we are planning to visit the Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer again on Friday afternoon. We also intend to get our own private guided tour and to have the possibility to lay our hands on some of the exhibits (with gloves, of course).
For those of you who are not interested (are there any???) the gym will be opened on Friday afternoon to give you the opportunity for sparring galore.
To keep your bellies satisfied we will provide a buffet on Friday evening after the lecture (hopefully it will be sufficient for all this time, you greedy bastards …), which will be held in a private club with place for app. 50 people – so register quickly!
Minimum requirements for participants (yes, that’s right!)
As you may or may not have realized until now – in this event we want to go further than the usual way of demonstrating some techniques and let the pupils do the same. This time we want to dig deeper and want to go for the principles. We asked our trainers to work out the basic ideas that stand behind the techniques.
And because of this approach it is necessary that the participants already have a general idea what fencing is about. This is NOT a beginners’ course – we only want advanced historical fencers. And we ask all trainers of all groups to strongly advise their beginners to bear this in mind and when in doubt about their own abilities refrain from participating. We do not want to lose time by explaining basic stances, blows or terms.
Our ideas of minimum requirements:
1. Knowledge about the terms of historical fencing in general and the German school in particular, knowledge of the basic sword-related terms.
2. “Huten”, Blows and Thrusts in theory and practice (Liechtenauer-tradition – for Fiore-tradition we have Matt )
3. Knowledge about the concept of the weak and the strong of the blade
4. In practice: Recognizing if someone is weak or strong and knowing how to react to it
We don’t think that these requirements are way too high, but in our opinion they will guarantee a smooth order of events.
(The schedule will be final and official if we know the number of participants)
Anyway we are planning to have two gyms again, so that one can be used all the time for showmanship in the form of sparring …
Friday: Start 2 p.m.: Arrival at the gym,
then departure for the Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer
Around 6 p.m.: Return to the gym (where you can leave your luggage)
Then off to the hostel for check-in and/or refreshing
Around 8 p.m.: Departure for lecture and buffet
Saturday: Start 9. a.m.: Introduction of the trainers – workshops
End around 6 p.m.
Evening: Boozing in a pub we still have to chose
Sunday: Start 9 a.m. (yes, we are being very optimistic )
End 6 p.m.
If you wish we can organize rooms for you in the youth hostel Brigittenau. It is located within about 10 walking minutes from the gym and quite a good location. You will need NO International YHA-card for this hostel. We will rent the rooms by one of our youngsters, so he will have the card for all rooms!
The prices for the rooms there are € 19,00 a night (with showers and toilett inside the room) or € 16,-- a night (with groupbathroom outside your rooms) – so please specify your date of arrival and departure when registering and which category you want. Breakfest is included!
Important: The earlier you register the bigger the chance to get a bed in the hostel. We can not guarantee a bed for those who register in the middle of January.
If you want we can also provide you with a list of other hostels/hotels/accommodations – just feel free to contact us.
We will charge all participants (even ourselves) € 90,00

Minimum number of participants:
As even we unfortunately do not get the locations, trainers, flights etc. for free we need a minimum number of participants if we don’t want to fill in our declaration of insolvency right now.
This means that we need at least 30 binding registrations until December 31st 2006 – otherwise we will have to cancel the whole event.
And to put it the other way round this means that we will fully refund your registration fee if you cancel your registration before this date – but not afterwards (unless, of course, the whole event will be cancelled, in which case everybody will get a full refund – even if our High Lord Of Finances strongly opposes this …)
Feel free to contact us via firstname.lastname@example.org – and for those of you who have Harry’s or Oli’s phone number – those have not changed
So if you want to join our event please send us an E-Mail and give us following information:
