Regret, mais je ne parle pas le francais bien, encore que je peux le apprendre.

Fab, si j'ai répété les informations dont vous avez déjà fournis, je m'excuse.

It's ok to post in english, Rob, but thank you very much for having taken the time of tranlating your announcement, as there certainly are people who cannot understand english very well. Your french is very good.

Seems like a very interesting event, and I'd love to attend. Shame It's a bit far from my current location.

Rapier 2011-24-25th September 2011 - The School of the Sword

This September, The School of the Sword will host a two day event dedicated to the study of the rapier.

The event, which celebrates the 10th anniversary of the School of the Sword, will consist of a series of workshops and a tournament, dedicated to the sword in all its forms. The key is that the level of the workshops and the expected level of participants is not "beginner". Our goal is to give experienced practitioners the opportunity to compare and contrast different sources and different styles, taught by good instructors, at a focused event for a weapon.

The event will take place the weekend of 24 - September 25th, 2011, at Browning Barracks, Alison Road, Aldershot, GU11 2AY UK. This site was made available to us courtesy of the officer commanding the 4th Medical Regiment

The gymnasium and changing rooms will be available as "crash space" to sleep. We can also provide lists of local hotels.

Details of the information, reservation and prices can be found here. I'm sorry, but the site is in English only. However, if you do have any questions, please PM me.

Hi Rob! Glad to read you here, in any langage.
I am looking foward this event since Phil and Case have told me that they wanted to organise it! I think it's a really good idea. I will do my best to be there. (...In fact, I need to be there!)
It's a pity that you won't be at Fightcamp.

Et je suis content de te voir parler français aussi ; )

See you at the rapier event!

Bonjour Thibault!

We have a few places left, if anyone still fancies attending. The tournament is looking particularly good, with Swedes, Austians, French, Belgian, German, Italian and English competitors.

My, what a good week end it was !

About 40 people gathered in Aldershot, using space kindly provided by the 4th Medical Brigade, for a weekend fully devoted to the Rapier (and dagger, sometimes). Even though we all know there are lots and lots of Rapier enthusiasts worldwide, the happy few that did make it there had all in common a dedication and love for this highly elegant and deadly weapon, and for the study of the teachings of the Masters of Old, which made for an incredible atmosphere of mutual respect, appreciation and kindness of spirit.

The fact that the famed School of the Sword was the host of this event also greatly added to its succes, I must say.

Even though this first edition was announced as aimed at "advanced" people, which could excuse for the shyness of some regarding their attendance, you really only needed to know but the rawest basics to get the full of your time there. The workshops, run by Phil Marshall, Reinier Van Noort, Andrew Feest, Dave Rawlings and Fabrice Cognot, provided intersting and sometimes wildly different takes and input on the use fo this weapon, emphasizing the richness of Historical Rapier fencing. From the delicate, instant-decision-making teachings of Thibault (thanks to Dave), to the transitional doctrines of Bruchius (as explained by Reinier), from the principles of Alfieri's main guard (thanks Phil & Caroline) to the dirty tricks of the Frenchman Dancie or the elegant moves of Italian material, we had a great time exploring - and maybe learning - how diverse, how deadly the rapier could be.

The tournament, run under Phil Marshall's rules, was a blast. Some fo the fights were purely fantastic. Some of the fighters were, dare I say, amazing. And up to the finals, this competition offered us a high level of entertainment and martial skill. Congratulations not only to those who made it to the podium, but to all participants for such a wonderful time - as a judge, I can but confirm how helpful it is to have fighters showing great spirit and high skill.
The final fight, especially, was a pure moment of Rapier joy between two of the best - and I'm not just speaking of Martial aspects now - fighters I know. And at the end, Thibault Ghesquière from De Taille et d'Estoc had the upper hand over an always brilliant Hans Jörnlind in a case of sudden death after what was one of the most entertaining fights of this competition. Well done, Thib !

Awards were also given to fighters not necessarily making it to the top tier, but who still achieved worthwile feats, or displayed the purest style. My memory fails me, so others will complete or correct my words ; but Rob Runacres of SotS was - for a short, time-suspending while - Fabris Incarnate. Another award went to another Rob (Wrightson) from Susser Sword Academy, and the third to Jason form SotS.

And we made new friends. And saw old friends. And we had good free play too. Battered, knackered, and therefore happy Smile

Our hosts were nothing but perfect, always preceding our needs, always providing more than too much. Plus, this event brought us good news that I'm not sure I'm allowed to share with you here - all I can say is I know what I'll get for Christmas. And the small book seems no less interesting than the big one (didn't I say too much already) ?

So, Thanks again to Caz, Phil, Rob and the SotS crew, and to all others who made it to Aldershot (and back). When next ?

Day One was filmed all the way through by one of our members, Carlie. She filmed the tournament from two angles and so will be taking some time to edit the two together - hopefully done over the next two weeks.

There are also several films from camera phones (including an epic bout between Thibault and I!); I do have a film of Thibault's last tournament fight, but I think the sound quality has been ruined by me saying 'c'mon, c'mon, c'mon Thibault, SMACK HIM ONE' and similar old English sayings. At any rate, we'll try to get something up on YouTube while we wait for the 'official' film.

Oh, and no-one look at my first two fights - they were shocking.
